Family Picture Saturday!

When you say "morning" - before 11AM? After 11AM, the sun starts to get higher in the sky and causes lots of unflattering light (assuming Daylight Savings Time).

If you're faced with noon photos, make sure you have plenty of reflectors to fill in the racoon shadows under the eyes. Fill flash would help, but don't overdo it as it starts to look fake.

Side lighting is best, IMO, because it avoids back lighting, but the subjects have a place to look that isn't too bright so they avoid squinting.

Make them laugh. Stupid photographer jokes always get better expressions.
