I like your less noisy B&W but agree that maybe a bit more contrast is necessary.

I'm still struggling with that though - my conversions are either too grey or too contrasty, most times. It's challenging!

FWIW ... I used a curve adjustment layer for a pic I did, seemed to work nicely ... pulled up on the right of the curve, down on the left ... then added a brightness/contrast layer and pulled up the contrast, then finally a B&W layer

FWIW. I like the first BW image a bit more, but I'd like to see the same image w less grain

I'd love to see it if you still have it. I work in LR so I can't do layers adjustments but the curve and sliders are pretty powerful.

Reworked it a little to give it more punch. Hopefully it's not too far the other direction now.

I dig #19 a little better
