Why are larger filters such as 72 and 62mm filter much more expensive than a smaller 58mm counterpart?

In Canada here, the Hoya R72 72mm IR filter costs about $200, while the 58mm version is only about $60.

larger anything is always more costly.

there is a very big difference between the 58mm and 72mm ; more than just the number would indicated.

It's bigger. More optical glass means less from the same stock. Also, it means that it's harder to get a perfect piece.
