So I've been searching and I couldn't find anything so sorry if this is a repost maybe I wasn't looking with the right criteria. But yes, enough with the apologizing.

I'm looking at filters, mostly for protection, but maybe also for effect. I prefer shooting in B&W. What effects should I expect with a UV, FL, and a Polarizer (obviously beyond glare reduction)?

There wont really be a change between no filter and a UV filter. Those are used mostly for lens protection, maybe to make the pictures a little clearer. The FL filters are really of no use unless you plan to be doing a lot of inside shooting in an area primarily lit by fluorescent lighting. Now the Polarizer will help darken skies in black and white and color. The best thing for b&w is a good red filter. It pulls out the contrast and darkens the sky. It's really the best type for black and white.

In regards to the red filters - which one would you recommend?
Or maybe even get a infra-red filter...??

did anyone notice they replied to a three year-old post?

there's camps which think UV filters are a waste of time since all they do is put crappy glass in front of expensive glass.

I used to use them. with 5 different filter sizes I gave up

infrared filters will work if you're only if you're using IR-sensitive film or sensor. they block visible light

if you work in photoshop, the only filters you can't mimic there is really a polarizer and some star effects

Just start your own thread, rather than dredge up 3 year old stuff. :lmao:

I hope the OP didn't subscribe to the thread.

    It's a virtue. :)

Haha I've progressed passed that need quite a while ago, although I've just recently started coming back to the forums, I did post a b/w today in the b/w gallery.
