Finding Models?

Business Card.

Simple. Even if you just buy some nice smooth edge inkjet business card paper and make your own. During your initial exchange of words, hand them your business card. They will take you more seriously than some strange guy walking around with a camera.

Even if they say no, they might rethink it and reference the card you gave them.

Also, attend friends birthday parties/get togethers. Buy a large hot shoe flash softbox, so that your camera really stands out. From the softbox alone, I have had numerous people come up and ask if I am a photographer. From there, I hand them my card and tell them I am always looking new faces for some photographic work. They are flattered.
