    Can anybody ID this bird for me? I think it's a heron but i'm not sure.

    We rowed by during practice and it was catching and eating this snake. I thought it was pretty incredible and i've never seen that before:

    Sure looks like heron to me, but our bird experts will know even better, like what KIND of heron it is.
    And what a scene to capture while rowing past! Wow!
    We see heron photos often, herons standing, on one leg only even, observing, waiting, or herons taking off (hats off to all our bird expert photogs for all their heron photos!!!!!) ... but I doubt we've ever seen one of catching and eating a water snake. Cool.

    Thanks to both of you. Yeah, we see herons a lot on this river and occasionally see them dive for fish. I've never seen this before though. It was really neat.


    Anybody else?

    Holy cow, what an interesting capture!! Good eye, and quick reflexes to get the pic as you rowed by.
