First Portrait. Open to your views

hi this is my second post on this forum, i decided to try a portrait style photo of my mother.

im not sure on the composition and i would like you guys to give me some critique please and how i can make it better

The DOF is excellent and I like the texture very much! What's going on on the top of the image - that black object blocking part of the photo is distracting.

Nice portrait. I wish I could get one of my family to sit for me!

Try bringing the right side of the frame right into the corner of her eye. It looks a little off with a small part of her eye showing.

Also maybe try playing with light directions to bring out the features of her face more.
