Fixing barrel distortion with software

One is supposedly able to fix any barrel distortion with the software included in the sales package - got Canon's Digital Photo Professional v3.4 in the box - but for some reason, the selection boxes for this function are grayed out and I cannot use them!

Do I need to do something before the function becomes active/available? Will it only work with certain lenses?

Is there any other software available to fix this?

Any help would be appreciated!

Are you shooting in raw?

No...will it only work on RAW images? I thought of the possibility but have not tried it yet.

Photoshop can, I donno if elements can ? Maybe gimp ?
