Flash question...

Ok, So I've been messing around with my Quantary MS-1 slave since I got it yesterday. Heres my question.

Whenever I take a picture without the MS-1 flash on, the picture is alot brighter. When I take a picture with the MS-1 flash on, the picture seems darker? Why is this?
