    i started out with this

    i then ran it through virtual photographer in photoshop cs to give it a soft black and white conversion then applied unsharp mask at 200/2/4 to pick out the details

    I like it. Not sure if I prefer the adjusted version or not...

    Wow. I like what you did. And I like the "golden" version with the sharpened details very much.
    Yes, compared to your post processing work your original is a bit "pale", but a very good start it is, anyway!!! Else you would not have arrived at your "golden version"!
