Format CF

i just got my rebel xt(my first dSRL) and i was look through the book and it said how to format your CF card, what does that mean? and do i need to format my compact fash before i take pictures? (i will only use the CF card for this camera if that makes a diffrence)

I format a card in the camera before I use it...but I'm not sure if you have to do it...but it won't hurt.

Also, when I off load the card onto my computer...and I'm sure they are safely on the hard drive...I format the card. Or I wait until my next shoot...then format the card or cards that I will use. It's just like erasing the old images off of it.
