I don't really know if this shot works or not - I was aiming for that pose and a darker background.

with canon 400D + canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS + 1.4*TC

I see what you were aiming for, and I like it, but something seems off to me. I looked a while and I think it might be that the photo, color-wise, is kind of bland. It's missing that color that most lion shots have, if ya know what I mean.

Other than that, I think good detail, good background blur, nice pose, etc.

Potential to be a great image here...IMO some eye contact between the lion and lens would have nailed it for you.

i love this shot lions are my favorite animals i agree color looks washed out but other than that nice job

Thanks for the compliments - I agree this shot has potential, but I think I needed to capture a more natural (in camera) low key effect to carry this off well; I have tried a re-edit here:

I am still not totally happy with the result - the black eye I think works well being empty and dark, but the rest - especially the background - is still lacking I feel
