Hi, I am brand new to the forum and a DSLR beginner, can anyone suggest any books that will help me learn the basics?

Welcome Flora :) I am still a newbie myself, and still learning. I have read a few books on photography, and have found a couple that have helped me out. One is the "National Geographic: The Ultimate Field Guide to Photography" and the other ones are the books in the "Photo Workshop" series (they have books on composition, lighting, macro, children, exposure, portraits).

The best way I have learnt is to just go out there and take photos.

    Good luck :)

Thanks a bunch, I am looking those up! It just all seems overwhelming when you are just starting out.

I agree with you - you sort of feel like you are drowning in all the information. Don't worry, you will make sense of it, and it will all be clear and in focus (pun intended). :)

I have read that book - its a good book to start off with as a very first starting point but I would go here and watch the video:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Pho...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212616843&sr=8-1

the book is very much written how he describes - its not going to explain the detials, but its a good starting point for getting to grips with things without confusing you. I would say its worth it to help ease you into a DSLR especially if you have very little or no real experience with cameras.
