And on the 25 July, 1909 - less than 60 years before - Louis Bleriot became the first man to cross the English Channel in an aeroplane.
So in a meagre 60 years the human race went from flying a few miles to flying to another world.

Though if you really think about the logistics, hell in a handbasket is quite a technical feat considering the massive heat vs flammable materials, no inherent locomotion, traveling dimensional boundaries, etc.
