Help choosing a tripod

I'm going Bogen/Manfrotto and have narrowed down my selection to the following legs and heads, but still have some questions. If anyone has used them, let me know if you think they're worth the investment.

Legs:
3001BN or 190XB

Is there much of a difference between the two?

Heads:
804RC2 or 3047

I'm leaning towards the 804RC2, but the the 3047 has tension control. Is it necessary? The 3047 seems bulky and could be a PITA to carry around.

Last question. More of an opinion. How do you carry your tripod--with a shoulder strap, or in a bag?

My friend, who is a professional landscape photographer, uses this cmobo:

Bogen/Manfrotto 3001N w/ 486RC-2 ball head

He likes it very much.....in fact he owns 2 (one he cut down the legs on for working closer to the ground.) He has me sold on these so much so I am going to be buying the 3011BN, which is basically the same exact one as the 3001N, only its max height is taller (75 inches) since I am 6' 4" tall.

Edit: I should also mention, he has used his Medium Format on this combo despite the stated weight limit with no problems.
