I need help.... I've been requested to give a program at our local camera club meeting about alternative lighting on night time shots. Any one have any suggestions or ideas ? Needed are tips and info on painting with a flashlight and any other idea you can come up with. I've heard of using your flash on timed exposures to light foreground detail but have never tried. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Jerry

Here's some examples:

Flash filling works just the same with foreground as background shots 4 flash shots to light up the foreground in this 4 minute exposure:

flash fired from left to freeze the action of the firetwirler. 0.5 second exposure to get city background and firetrails:

Me standing there with someone going around me with a red light pointed towards the camera:

This boat was a long exposure and lit by using a 1000000candella torch slowly tracking over the entire surface. Took a few goes to get it uniform:

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Just curious, why are you giving a program that you don't know about?

Like a book report? Learn and share?

Anways, I saw something interesting on strobist where a photographer was using remote flashes for landscape photography. He was using colored gels to create a mood. Really cool stuff.

If you think that's cool, check out Troy Paiva's stuff.
