help with nikon d 90

I'm having trouble focusing when I take pics at a 10k run

What setting do you have the camera on?
What lens are you using? Are you looking to stop action or show a little motion in your photos?
I have a d90 which work great for sports with numerous lens types.

Make sure your camera is set to Auto.

It would be easier if you stopped running.

Use the fastest shutter speed to capture the runner without the image being dark. Maybe put your camera in continuous shooting mode.
