help with old nikon!

A couple of months ago, I was given my father's old nikon. It's about 20-30 years old and in really good shape, but I know NOTHING about how to use it. The only film cameras I have ever used have been entirely way too simplistic to have taught me anything about this one, and I'm not even sure of what model of camera I have. It's a silver film nikon with a primarily black body, and that's about all I know. It took me a while, but I finally figured out how to work the camera (primatively) and load film, etc. Pretty basic stuff. Now I'm interested in learning about how to actually take pictures that will look nice, and I want to be able to utilize the abilities of the camera. If there's any advice you can give me, any sites or books you can reccommend, or really just any direction you could point me in, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks so much!!

Understanding Exposure seems to be a popular recommendation. Just go out a shoot. A lot.
