Hi, I'm hoping to find some advice to make the expensive X-mas gift my wife gave me (at my direction) show results. I upgraded from a Sony DSC-H1 to the new Sony A100 DSLR. My first DSLR.
I'm an avid fisherman and got started in photography by snapping sunrises/sunsets while out fishing. The last few years I get more pics than fish......

    Some of my "stuff"

Hope to do better with the new camera. :)

  2. Welcome. You obviously have a good eye, and a good sense of aesthetics. Keep at it, read the manual of your new camera, experiment, and give your wife a kiss. She got you a nice present.

Ask questions here, and people will share their knowledge.

Photography is fun. It is one of the few hobbies that you can practice anytime, anywhere, under any circumstance. Try that with fishing!

I would like to recommend that you take off the "date" that prints on your photos. Photos look much better without them!

    Welcome to TPF

First off, I'd like to say the pictures look good to me. I would agree with oldnavy here and suggest turning the date stamp off.

With fishing, you have to be up before the sun, as you know. Sunrise and sunset are the two times of the day that make nature photographers go nuts. These two times offer the best light during the day, and being that your already out there is a large boon.

If you would like to learn more about photography in the simplest terms, that of exposure, I would suggest the book Understanding Exposure: Revised Edition by Bryan Peterson. This book, I think, is amazing at describing the in's and out's of the process(not to mention the beautiful pictures of the author ).

As always, I feel the best way to get better is tool around with your equipment and get to know it better.

Good luck with the new camera!

Thank you all. I have stopped using the date stamp, at the time I was mainly taking pictures of the days catch and it helped to have the date. Sobek5150, I'll have my wife look for that book. Thanks for the suggestion.
