Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
I'm not able to get this on my own, so I thought I'd ask here for some advice. These are from stacieturnerphotography.com, and very lovely I think. I was wondering how she gets everything completely black except for her subject. So far mine are coming out nothing like this!

im guessing off camera lighting?...or editing after the picture is taken...or both

The parent is wearing black, as is the background. Lighting focused on the subject which isn't enough to illuminate the clothes, and most definitely not the background.

my guess would be that a softbox was used and directed just at the child

Ah...I figured so. Unfortunately I have nothing for decent lighting at the moment, but hopefully that will change in the future. I imagine that's much of my problem. ;)

Thanks for the quick replies!

I did the same with my son's birth announcements with a simple flash and off shoe cord. Just as ANDS! said, I had the mother wearing a black velvet blouse and sitting in a chair that was covered with black cloth. It was actually quite a pleasant time for us being the new father and mother.
