How is this set up

So right now I have an Olympus e-410 and a 70-300 mm f/5.6 lens. I have real trouble getting quality shots at night games. So I want to upgrade and figured I should switch over to Nikon or Canon now sense I am young and plan on shooting for a long time. So I was thinking about buying a used Canon 40d for around 600 bucks and a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) lens for around 900. How does that sounds. I don't want to buy that nice of a body I just want something decent then start building up some nice glass then upgrade to a nice body after a while. What do you guys think.
