I hunt primarily at night and want to get a lighted shot of my subjects but keep the night sky dark with the stars showing. I understand that light painting with a small flashlight and using a long exposure can help get my picture.

Question is what kind of lens should I consider?
Will a wide angle lens distort the close up subject?

Yes, whether that's a problem is subjective. Also, if i was going to try painting with a torch, i would look at matching the colour temperature of it and the ambient light with a gel.

I have a small flashlight that I made different color lens for for this project. Was practicing in my backyard and found different hues of light really made a difference. I began with coloring plastic and placing it over the flashlight.
