I'm in the market for another lens......

I am looking for a new lens. My 18-55mm sux! I would like something that replace it. I was thinking maybe something along the lines of 20mm to 100mm, I would like this to be the range after the 1.5x conversion. I need something that is as sharp as my 70-300mm VR. I also need something fast, preferably something that is f2.8 throughout the range. My price limit is $650. I know that I probably won't find exactly what I need in my price limit but there should be something close. Thank you in advance for all your help.

Maybe a sigma 24-70 f/2.8 which would effectively crop to a 36-105mm? I recently got one to replace my kit lens. Pretty happy with it, it is 2.8 through out the focal range, gets good reviews, and is reasonably sharp. I got mine slightly used off ebay, I think new they retail for about $400 from sigma4less.com and about $450 from B/H.

The nearly impossible part is the "20" in your 20 to 100 after conversion. That'd be a hair over 13mm before conversion. You'd need about a 13-65mm lens.

The obvious choice for me is the one I made. I replaced the 18-55 kit lens with the 17-55 f2.8 zoom. It provides the same focal length range but it does not suck.

That would work if the lens wasn't $1200 dollars. That's twice the amountof money I have to spend.
