iMac hard drive is dying

Both. My wife has a MacBook pro and was having a similar issue a couple weeks ago, went to the apple store and they replaced the hard drive free as it is some sort malfunction with said hard drive. Good luck

Sorry, been a while since I used the older version of Disk Utility. I believe if memory serves me correctly that this is what your Disk Utility should look like.

If you look on the left side across from the Verify Disk button is the Verify Disk Permissions. All part of Disk Utility but they run separately.

This is what the new disk utility looks like. All in one first aid instead of two separate functions.

Older article but good for pre El Capitan as well as Capitan users. I wouldn't get to excited about Disk Permissions but it would be good to check once in a while.
Oddly, I've seen that first window, but I don't remember how I got it. The second style I've never seen.

The first illustration is the disk utilities window in
Yosemite. It is in the utilities folder.

The second illustration you would not have seen. It is the way the disk utility program looks now in El Capitan.

Oh, right! Silly of me to forget where that is. Thanks!
