I have a guy who will trade me my my 70-200 f4 for his 70-200 2.8 if I add 500 bucks and give him my nifty fifty. His lens is only 2 months old. Mine is 4 years old. I didnt want to give up the 50mm but the f4 just isnt what I was hoping for. Think it is a fair trade?

no. i think you're giving up too much

do you think 450 and the fifty or is this still too much? I kinda want the 50mm 1.4 anyways.

The f/4 used in good condition I think it should be around $450 - $500. The good condition used 50mm should be $75. That is $525 - $575 (or higher depends on lens condition).

Add $500, so it is like $1025 to $1075.

Can you buy the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 for around $1025 to 1075?

new, the 2.8 model is $1900 and the f4 model is $640

it's totally worth it from a cost standpoint if the 50mm is a 1.8 and a very close maybe if it's a 1.4 but it makes me wonder what the catch is

You mean the 50mm lens is the f/1.4, not f/1.8 (nifty fifty)?

If that is the case, it is (f/4) $450 ~ $500 + (50mm) $300 + (cash) $500 =
$1250 - $1300 (depends on lens condition).

That is over regular street price for a brand new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM. ($1210 at adorama)

So I will not trade for that. Not even pay $400 + 50mm f/1.4

its the non IS version so its about 1200 new and 950-1000 used.

no i was saying i wanted to get the 50mm 1.4 anways. so losing the 1.8 isnt a dealbreaker.

Trying to get down to if you may or may not "save" a few bucks is simply an exercise..

The questions are... Do you have a 70-200 f4, and a 50 f1.8, that you want to move up from, and is the 70-200 f2.8 the lens you want ?

If that is the case, then you are getting the lens you want and getting rid of lenses that you want to get rid of...

In the end, you will still need to buy your 50mm 1.4, but if the 500 bucks isn't going to keep you from the mortgage payment, it may be something to think about....... and that 70-200 f2.8 is a sweet keeper..:D

ok so here's what I am countering. 500 and the F4 or 420 the F4 and the 50mm 1.8. I am not looking to get the better deal here. Just an equal trade. His lens is newer and under warranty mine is flawless but a few years old.

yes I want to upgrade from the F4 to the 2.8. I didnt want to lose the 50mm 1.8. But I will live until I can get the 50mm 1.4. I hope he takes my counter offer I thinkit is fair. If not then I will have to think about it.

non-IS version. yeah, that's a close one.

me, I don't use my 50mm very much so being without it for a better lens would be worth it to me if I had the cash.

4 vs 2.8 is a doubling of your light which means faster shutter speeds across the board

well he said he is standing firm on his ofer since he has the receipt and warranty since it is only two months old. I asked how much cash and he said 1200. a little high for used. I guess I will have to think for a few. How bad do I really want it. No one on here has one they want to off for my last deal do they!

For $1200, I will say forget it.

Pay $10 more and buy a brand new one from most places.
For example, $1210 at J&R with free shipping. And bing.com has cash back to make it even better.
