I have serveral books on portraiture. Some say different things. Some say the same things in a different way. My question is, is there one book that is the authority on portrait photography? One book that I can follow.:meh:

I would say try whatever you read. Then when you figure out what works...just do it. I'm sure most of the info in the books is good enough to make an attempt.

    Welcome to the forum.

There is not one book to follow for portraiture.
You need to remember that photography is an art...and there is no right or wrong in art. There isn't any one way to paint a landscape painting...or even to paint a portrait. So there isn't any one correct way to photograph a portrait either.
