I really like Canon G7 for its fuctions. But I don't think its a compact camera.

Is there anything smaller (like Sony cameras) but that good as Canon G7 ?

Do you consider a "hotshoe" a significant function in the G7?

The Sony DSC-v3 doesn't look that much smaller.

First of all I consider an opportunity to focus on a fly. Sony v3 focuses too slow while Canon G7 can focus just perfect even when a target is moving fast. And Sony v3 has quite a lot of noise.

Yes Sony v3 is not a compact camera at all

What about Panasonic Lx-2. It's seems that it's good enough but I don't like the thing I'll have to put on a cover on its lenses.

Panasonics seem to have a good range of compacts...the LX-2 has nice features including RAW and tests suggest low noise at high iso´s.

Also, I was looking at an interesting, rather small Nikon Coolpix last night...not sure which model, maybe it was a P5000 ...in which case, it looks good but I don´t think it does RAW.

The Canon A710 IS has most of the functions, is much smaller and takes great pictures. It is not, however, nearly as slick to use. I got mine last month for $240 from Dell (strangely enough, they had the best price I could find anywhere for a US warranty A710).
