Just got the SB-600?

I just got a flash but the only way I can get it to not blow out the picture is to throw up the fstop all the way.

I hate full depth of field.

School me on the correct technique of using flash?

Put the camera and flash into TTL-BL mode. done.

DOF is relative to your distance to the subject so f16 at 4ft wont give you the depth of f16 @ 10ft say, move closer to the subject n close down that aperture.

are you trying to do balanced fill flashing in good light? If so you may need to turn on FP in your camera's flash sync settings.
