Lens for Basketball

ya i got to get a powerful flash such as a SB-600 since when are shooting snowboarding we are shooting at like 1am in the morning and it is pitch black


I've shot with Sunpaks before and I don't think you'll really have any problem with power from it. It shouldn't be much less capable of anything the SB could do except for TTL which shouldn't really affect your night shooting since light conditions won't be changing much if at all.

To me, the differences between the Sunpak and SB600 aren't much when compared to the differences between a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 and 70-200 f/4. It's up to you, but it should be easy to see where the value lies.
 
If you can swing $400 for the 85 f1.8 that should give you a decent shot from the side lines with the wide ap for isolating the players while getting that fast shutter speed. Im sure you can find them used for 300-350.
