I kind of know 50mm f/1.8 is good for portraits and obviously macro lens are good for macro shots. But what do telephoto and wide angle and other lens good for?

Their name says it all? I don't mean to be a smart ass but the wide angle you use for wide shots for buildings, interior shots and the telephoto to zoom in on things?

Along these lines, if a 50 1.8 at all useful outdoors or as a general lens?

Every lens excels in a certain type of photography, yes. But the most fun is had when you mix it up. Portrait with a 10mm? Yes please!
