i just puchased the new canon 40d (amazing) and i bought the 50mm 1.8 lens to go with it. i love this lens and the quality it gives to the close up shots. i need something new. i am going to photograph a friends band this weekend at a show they are doing and was wondering what lens i should consider purchasing for that. i need some closer shots than the 50mm allows. i must admit i know nothing about this stuff i just love photography. i am learning as i go so sorry if i sound like an idiot.

- i want a lens that can take those wide angle warped shots.
- i also want one that i can zoom in pretty close.

any advice?

fisheye lens is what you're thinking of. Those are pretty pricey...but you get what you pay for. Canon makes a nice one.

This should do it http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12069-USA/Canon_2535A003_Fisheye_EF_15mm_f_2_8.html it is a 2.8 for around $579 but it is a straight 15 so it is only fish-eye so you have no flexibility. They also have a 14mm but it is $1700 so I thought it was a little over your budget. Canon makes a slower 10-22 but it is slow and, not being a Canon person I do not know if it works on the 40D http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/351542-GREY/Canon_9518A002_EF_S_10_22mm_f_3_5_4_5_USM.html .
