What about the Tamron 17-50 2.8...I beleive it's around $500 and it's a very sharp lens.
My review here shows a progression of stops/focal length for both indoor and outdoor performance (although on a Canon, you should expect same optical performance): http://www.motleypixel.com/reviews/index.htm?openfolder=Tamron Zooms/Tamron SP 17-50mm f2.8 LD Di/ Available for Nikon as well.
Check the larger version of each photo using the down arrow icon for a closer look. Not a bad lens IMHO.
