Lens types?

Could I run the risk of upsetting you for a moment and suggest that maybe the horse should go in FRONT of the cart.

S T O P . Think about what you want to photograph, How you want to photograph it, And how you want it to look when you show it....

Now. Go and buy a lens that will enable you to do just that. (You may even have it already).

From what you say you will need several different lenses. "General" is abroad term . Sport you need a fast lens (Usually expensive) Focal length depends on what the sport is, but 200 -300 is usually about right, unless of course you mean Snooker / darts at one end or offshore powerboat racing from the beach at the other. Family ... a standard zoom around 50 to 150mm should cover most things, and general Nature.... Insects a good 150mm macro with macro flash. Herds of majestic wilder-beast roaming the Savannah 500mm fast "L" series...
As you can see you have a broad spectrum already. give it a while so your preferences can develope, and then look deeply into your wallet and decide which way you want go.
Unless you want to go pro avoid the "L" series type of lens. A superb piece of glass but the extra edge is VERY expensive. but go for good quality, As much as you can afford.
Wide apperture will give a shallow depth of field (What is in focus) and a narrow apperture a deeper DOF. Most lenses give their best results somewhere in the middle of their range, usually around f8 (Rule of thumb only, but not a bad one).
