Lens vs Teleconverter

Kinko 1.4 teleconverter will bring you out to 420mm and you will loose one stop. Quality is still descent.

480, not a bad idea. I've been trying to pool friends together so they each only have to give up one. I'm not opposed to other parts also. Not sure what the current pricing is on body parts, though.

I'm thinking I'll keep looking. It might be a good investment for wildlife/nature. I've been happy with Sigma's HSM lenses, Overread. I have wondered about an older 300/2.8 as well. That might actually work ok with some practice.

There are cheaper 150-500mm and 50-500mm options and as you're on Nikon you might find some second hand primes in your price bracket (although some of them might be older and thus lack AF motors - which would be a hindrance with modern DSLR as they are not geared up for helping the user shoot with manual focusing - not impossible, but not ideal).
OP has a D7100 so the older AF lenses are an option.

Hell, even a used lens with HSM might get you in the right price range (KEH?)

Is 600mm on a crop sensor too long for basketball anyway?
