50mm on FX and it's cheap to boot!

Yeahhhh..... doesn't quite work like that my friend. It's 35mm on DX and almost completely worthless on film and un-cropped FX due to severe vignetting, which is why it's so cheap (that 35mm f/2D of theirs has to continue to be worth $300 or so at retail...). If it were a FX lens (which would mean 50mm on DX) then I would definitely have picked one up in a few months.

...besides you don't really use a flash for B&W photography, right)?

You do not need a flash for B&W anymore than you need flash for colour pics.

...about that 28 f/2.8..... maybe a 20mm f/2.8 instead? Not that the angles are that much of a difference, but if anyone knows about difference in IQ between them?
