Annie Leibovitz - Life Through A Lens

Have you seen this film yet?

I just got back from a director's showing here in Japan. Annie was supposed to be there but if she was she stayed hidden. There were only about 80 ~ 100 people there. It was at some producer/director's private theater. The film was interesting. The people afterward more so.

What did you guys think?

I think I missed it. Sounds like a great time!

If it comes around here I'm sure to catch it. Chances are that I'll have to look it up for a private screening though. :/

Never saw the picture. Post some details and your thoughts.

I believe she commands some really great subjects and subsequently some amazing photos. I think she has been at it since the ripe age of 15, which in itself is very impressive. Also saw a traveling show of her recent work (about 3 years ago) and her expertise at capturing the subjects personality was very clear. An inspiration of sorts.

This film traces the artistic self-realization of Annie Leibovitz, from childhood through the death of her beloved friend, Susan Sontag, and includes snippets of Leibovitz's last visual memories of Sontag. The film traces the arc of her photographic life, her aspirations to artistry, and the trajectory of her career through phases that included the tumultuous sixties in Berkeley, CA., touring with the Rolling Stones, a mentorship by Hunter S. Thompson, and, later, capturing the last candid moments of John Lennon's life with Yoko Ono. It closes with her reflections on life, children, and the the wake of her relationship with Sontag. The archival material presented here is invaluable for framing an understanding of this immeasurably influential visual artist. - anon.

Here's her Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Leibovitz That tells more than I ever could here.

Here's her SPOK page: http://www.spock.com/Annie-Leibovitz

Here's one of her rolling stone cover shots - incredibly taken just 5 or 6 hours before John was shot and killed: http://www.john-lennon.com/rollingstonejanuary1981.jpg

It's probably already old in the USA.

not seen it, but sounds interesting-!!

Oh well... Being this is a photography site I thought for sure there would be a handful of folks who had both seen it and that had something to say about her/this film.

Maybe now that it's been discussed a little I'll see mention of it in the future.. <shrug>

It was very interesting. I liked the way it went from her early Rolling Stones, drugged up, low budget days to the huge mega-budget Hasselblad Vanity Fair shoots. An interesting watch for those who are interested.

Yes! I found someone with a copy I could borrow.

I need to see it two or three more times to get a better sense of her. If it does me any good, she appears to be one of those people you can't really get to know unless they let (instruct) you.

Thank you Bifurcator, a worth-while use of time!

I just rented the DVD today ripped it to HDD and watched it a second time. It's definitely a film you get more out of by watching multiple times.
