When the iris is fully open the aperture ('aperture stop') is usually circular. There are lenses that use 'Waterhouse stops' which are plates with a hole in the middle. The holes are usually circular but can be other shapes.
These lens artefacts are also known as ghosts. Flare can also refer to an overall loss of contrast caused by internal reflections.
