is there any way to set the bulb setting on a D40 to act like the remote trigger without using a remote. so it would be a push to open the shutter and a push to close it. instead of push and hold to open and release to close

Try a remote shutter release cord. With the remote, you push it down and lock it to open the shutter, and then unlock it and let the button pop up to close the shutter.

This also eliminates the camera shake associated with actually having to touch the camera to depress the shutter release.

No. It's electronic. And actually, for the D40, my Google-Fu says that there is no remote shutter release cord, but there is a wireless (infrared) remote shutter release called the ML-L3. Press the button once to open the shutter; press again to close the shutter.

you are thinking of the ML-3 which does not work with d40s the ML-L3 does in fact work with D40s in bulb mode but there is no half depressed button auto focus capability

yeah i bought the ML-L3 it works for me
