Looking for a new Camera

Hey I need help deciding which camera I should buy as my first DSLR.

I went to Best Buy today to check out some and thought that the Nikon D40 wasn't too bad (New to photography so I didn't know what half the stuff did ) Would it be worth it to get the x over the standard D40?

Anyway, I am looking for something preferably less than $600. If not no more than $700

Currently I have a craptacular Kodak EasyShare C633


And sorry if this is the wrong forum for buying advice, it seemed like the best fit

I am a nikon guy... but there are a lot of cannon guys here too. (it's just asking for a verbal confrontation if you ask which one is better here) =o)

Honestly, go to b&h photo (there's a link to it at the top of this page) and read the reviews. I vote for the Nikon (but I am biased because I own them. I have a d70, d200 have shot d50's [dad in laws] and bought my kid the coolpix s9 - which is a great little point and shoot - wife won't let me buy the D3 yet, but I a thinking about another d200 (great future camera for you if you keep with this photo thing), I need another backup.)
