Looking to buy a DSLR....

I'm currently using a Nikon Coolpix 5400 (really old digital point and shoot) and looking into spending 500-750 bucks on a new dslr. I'm thinking of staying with nikon, but my options are open. What are some good choices from your own experiences?

Nikon versus Canon.. (dangerous thread to start)

The choice between the two will be totally personal preference. The only way to make a decision is for you to head to a local retailing and hold both. Either brand will do the job.

Also.. don't forget the other brands which also have a lot to offer: Pentax, Olympus, Sigma, Sony, etc..

My personal opinion... For someone on a budget, the Pentax line of DSLRs are hard to beat in terms of bang for buck.

hm, alright cool. i never thought of that.. i guess at this point it's either nikon or pentax, I've held a few nikons and I'm used to the design so i guess that's probably the way to go. Ill try a few pentax's and see what I like. thanks for the help- i'll edit out the nikon/canon thing so i dont start a fanboy-war :].
