Just trying out my new zoom lens comments/critiques appreciated

#2 a crop of #1?? Always interested about exposure times. So what settings are you using here?

Two separate pictures... I wasnt sure which one I liked better: the first one that is more crisp and clear, or the second which was closer and more detailed.

Settings:
0.001s exposure
100 ISO
300mm zoom

I've just started using a Pentax zoom lens with my Canon Rebel XT, so I had to play with the settings quite a bit to get one that worked... When I use that lens, I usually have to have the settings set to somewhat of an "underexposure"... usually about four ticks from the normal exposure. (If that doesnt make sense, I'll try to figure out a better way to explain it)
