m first camera...part II

ok so for a while i was using my moms old canon EF camera circa 1973...BUT as it turns out the light meter is broken and unfixable, its definitly time for a new camera

The specific camera i was looking at was the Canon EOF Elan 7n body ($300) with a Canon 50mm f/1.8 standard lens (about $70). Are there any other cameras for about this price or less (body and lens) that are equal quality or better? I am also trying to keep in mind that im buying a whole camera SYSTEM by doing this--including body, lens, flashes, accesories, etc.
