Another critical peice is lighting. Shooting up close creates very narrow depth of field (DOF) so unless you prefer narrow DOF, you will have to close down the aperture (bigger number) which will slow your shutter speeds so much that you will need a tripod or external lighting (flash). Extension Tubes exacerbate the lighting problem. Nate above mentioned this.
