Does anyone know of a relatively cheap macro lens for the D40?

You may be able to use your current lens if you pair it with an extention tube or bellows setup. Typically people use these with a macro lens to achieve even more magnification, but they will work with any lens--allowing you to focus closer.

Don't worry about losing auto focus since, it's nearly worthless in macro photography as well.

The only real benefit of a "true" macro lens is that they are very sharp.

"Cheap" and "Macro" don't really go together ;)

You can get a Nikon AI Micro for around $100-$200 and manually focus and meter. Although, I'm considering using extension tubes as well.

Will extension tubes and a 50mm AI prime achieve good results?

True, but manually focusing on the 18-55mm kit lens is pretty awful.

That and they have a longer focusing thread - meaning easier focusing at the macro scale - though since a lot of macro is setting the focus and then moving the camera to gain focus its not too much of a bother.

I would also ask just how cheap cheap is?

I was hoping for something around $300-$400. I forgot about extension tubes. Thanks for the quick replies.
