Messin with B and W HDR

I'd appreciate some feedback about this image. It was made with a Sony A57: One shutter release and the camera did the rest.

how is this HDR?

When I set my Sony A57 to HDR mode, and press the shutter release, it will take 3 rapid shots, 1 shot at normal exposure, 1 shot at a lower f stop(1to 6 f stop range), and 1 shot at an equally higher f stop. Then the camera, through magic which remains unknown to me, stacks the 3 images to produce the HDR finished product and the image exposed at the median value as well. Doesn't Nikon have a similar tool in it's high end cameras?

Highlights are blown out. Does Sony do the B&W conversion along with the HDR or did you do that after the fact?

I converted it easily with one click with Picassa.

Another way of accomplishing an HDR with my Sony is to select an art mode called "painting/high". This mod works like the HDR: One shutter depression, then desaturate in post-processing.

This is the image that the camera provided. It was reduced in file size per forum demands and sharpened a bit.
