A young friend of mine recently borrowed my old 55mm Nikkor lens. His ma called today wondering if she could buy one for him as a Christmas gift.

I'd rather see him get a modern lens. He has a Nikon... I think the 200.

She says she has a budget for this. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
Pete

The modern equivalent is the 60mm f2.8. It is pretty comparable optically to the 55 f2.8 but it goes to 1:1 without a tube. It's a little better than the 55 f3.5. I use one myself. It would provide AF and all the fancy metering with his D200. I think it is probably worth the extra money. Perhaps she can find a used one on Ebay or Cameta or someplace.
