need help with a quick lense decision for canon

Just got my XSI yesterday and was gonna get a EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM wich at my local store is $649 but the Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS Telephoto Zoom Lens f/4-5.6 is on sale for $289, my question, is the extra 50mm worth the $400+ - extra or am i missing another diff?

If you're in the $6xx range, look into the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. I have it and love it. (selling it soon to get the 70-200 f/2.8L IS) but it's a great lens.

yikes, $650 for a 70-300?
i see them on Craig's List all the time.. for half that price.
Adorama has a refurbished one for $449.95
