Networking/Leads groups?

Hi,
I see listings every week in my paper about networking groups that meet every month. Some are all-women related, or grouped into other categories. Thinking about joining one.
Has anyone been a member of one of these meet-in-person leads groups, and if so has it led to increased business for you? What exactly goes on?? They all meet at restaurants, so do you just sit around eating and throwing names at each other? :???:
