I suggest getting a good book to get you started. Understanding Exposure, is one that I see recommended quite often.

dreadaisy, I am in much the same boat as you. I still have just a point and shoot camera, but am trying to learn as much as i can how to take good pictures. I'd like to get capable enough to justify buying a "nice" camera!

Big Mike, do you know the author of that Understanding Exposure book?

I'm always on the lookout for good books, too. The first one I picked up at my local bookstore(who doesn't have much of a selection at all, I'll have to order in) was called The Joy of Digital Photography by Jeff Wignall. Very beginner oriented, covering the basics of all aspects, which was really helpful for me. I'm now looking for others that go more in depth.

    [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003[/ame]

John Hedgecoe's books are also pretty good

Don't be afraid to go to the library and check out some older books on photography. The basics are the same with digital today, as they were with film...so you don't necessarily need a new 'digital' book.

Thank you! Are there other books that would be of use in helping me to learn what I need too?

You could also check into your local community college and see if they offer a photography program, and take some classes.

Thank you! I might do that! Although teaching does not allow me much time off to take classes. I like books because I can read on my own time in between grading papers etc.

As well as reading, go out and take some pictures, lots of them. Look at the photo critique forums and you'll see lots of good advice there. The folks there are always ready to help.
