new to digital photography

So.. I did a lot of film photography in high school and a little bit when I got out. I love being in the darkroom. But now I am not in school and don't have access to a darkroom. So I bought a D40. Only thing is.. I'm not to good with electronical devices... and my computer for whatever reason will not install photoshop.. so I am attempting to use GIMP.. any advice..

Also here is a picture. PLEASE tell me what you think

Welcome! Nothing wrong with The Gimp; it's a very powerful program, and will do pretty much everything you need as far as photo editing. With respect to your image, a couple of thoughts. The first thing that strikes me is that it's slightly over-saturated and/or under-exposed; say about 2/3 stop. I really like the reflection you've captured in the window, but I think the image would have benefitted from a wider crop to include all of the "star".

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.
